Start with availability and the basics
Openings can change quickly, and a home may have a waitlist even when a directory profile is active. Ask what is available now and whether the available room matches the resident’s needs.
- Are you accepting residents right now?
- Is the opening private or shared, and is it on the main floor?
- What is the expected move-in timeline?
- What payment types do you accept, including Medicaid or private pay?
Describe the care need plainly
Give a short, honest description of the resident’s day. Mention mobility, memory, medication, behavioral, dietary, and nighttime needs when they are relevant. The goal is not to make a final care decision on the phone; it is to find out whether a full conversation makes sense.
- What care needs can your current team support?
- How do you support medication and mobility needs?
- What memory-care or dementia experience does the team have?
- What happens if care needs increase?
Ask how the home communicates
Families often learn the most from questions about communication. Ask who you would call, how updates are shared, and how the home works with clinicians and family members when something changes.
- Who would be our main family contact?
- How are urgent and routine updates handled?
- What should we bring or prepare for a tour?
- Can we review licensing and inspection information before deciding?
